Destinations: Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam

The Cuc Phuong NP lies in northern Vietnam. It is a scenic forested limestone upland around 120km SW of Hanoi. There is a national park HQ that organises guides and excursions to the main sites. One can stay right in the park as there is a simple but more than adequate guesthouse and a restaurant. The staff are very helpful. Special wildlife includes the rare primate Delacour's Langur and Red-collared Woodpecker. It is a place to take one's time, walking and trekking in search of wildlife, with mornings and evenings definitely best.

Crane Migration in Hungary

Every autumn over 100,000 Common Cranes (Grus grus) pass through and linger in eastern Hungary. Watching them and listeneing to them at dusk as they go to roost is a great event, one of Europe's top birding spectaculars. Photo of this group in the twilight by Gerard Gorman: www.probirder.com

Accommodation: Metsola Apartments, Spanish Pyrenees

The Metsola Apartments are located in the quaint village of Isaba, in the Roncal Valley, Navarra, Spain. This is an excellent base from which to explore the Western Pyrenees. The rooms are high standard, with a kitchen and free WIFI. No meals are served, but several eateries of all types are nearby. The very helpful staff speak several languages. The surrounding area is very scenic, in all seasons, and rich in birds, especially raptors. Wild Cat, Alpine Chamois and Alpine Marmot also occur. All in all, Metsola is a quality option for wildlife travellers to this beautiful mountain region.
