The Karalia region of Finland is one close to Finnish hearts. It is a region that has been fought over several times. Nestling up against the Russian border it is not densely populated and in parts very wild. It is a land of Taiga forests, lakes and bogs with good numbers of Brown Bear, Wolf and Wolverine. These mammals are not easy to see without local help but a variety of lodges with local guides, sometimes with photo-hides, can assist in that.
Before joining any wildlife watching or birding tour, wherever in the world, try to establish if the travel company you are considering booking with operates in an environmentally friendly, responsible manner.
